Use your DELF results
to sit HKDSE French
From the 2025 HKDSE onwards, Category C French uses DELF exam results, replacing the Cambridge International AS Level exam used previously.
Minimum requirement
Candidates need a DELF result of A2 or above. A2 is a safe baseline, while B1 or B2 gives a stronger boost to JUPAS applications.
Validity
The HKEAA uses the best DELF result obtained within the two years before the HKDSE.
Exam dates
In Hong Kong, DELF Junior is usually held in May and December, with registration about one to two months before. In 2026, registration ran from March to early April and from late September to late October.
JUPAS score conversion reference
Below is a reference for how some universities convert DELF Junior results into HKDSE scores under the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS).
| University | DELF Junior A2 | DELF Junior B1 | DELF Junior B2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| HKU | 4 | 5.5 | 7 |
| CUHK | 3 | 3 | 4 |
| HKUST | 3 | 4 | 5.5 |
| PolyU | 3 | 4 | 5.5 |
Based on 2025 JUPAS admission requirements, for reference only. Weightings and calculation methods may vary by programme. Please check each university's official website for the latest information.
Start early
Language skills take time to build. Reaching A2 from zero usually takes about 120 to 270 hours of study, so students planning to sit HKDSE French should start early and leave time to retake the exam if needed.
How to register
DELF exams in Hong Kong are run by the Alliance Française de Hong Kong. For exam dates, registration, fees and HKDSE rules, please refer to the latest information from the Alliance Française de Hong Kong and the HKEAA.
